El estándar de textiles orgánicos GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) ha lanzado un buscador online para acceder a su base de datos de organizaciones que han certificado sus procesos de producción bajo las normas de textiles y fibras.
Esta base de datos on line representa una nueva herramienta que ayudará a coordinar, de una manera más transparente y eficiente, la cadena de producción a las organizaciones que quieran dedicarse a la comercialización de productos sostenibles.
Según tal entidad, aproximadamente 1500 empresas, con 2811 fábricas, en 55 países, han sido certificadas bajo estas normas en 2009. Esto significa un incremento del 40% si lo comparamos con las 1977 certificaciones realizadas en 2008.
GOTS es un conjunto de normas específicas y voluntarias que certifican el proceso en la cadena de producción (hilado, tejido, tintura, etc.) de los materiales y textiles orgánicos, como pueden ser el algodón o la lana, de prendas de vestir y de hogar. Contempla normas ambientales como son, la prohibición del uso de alteración genética o de químicos peligrosos (tintes sin AZO y formaldehído) así como la adecuada gestión de las aguas residuales. GOTS vela también por temas de carácter social condenando el uso de la mano de obra infantil a la vez que fomenta la inclusión de requisitos relativos a salarios dignos.
GOTS-International Working Group está compuesto por International Association Natural Textile Industry en Alemania, Organic Trade Organization en Estados Unidos, Japan Organic Cotton Association en Japón y Soil Association en Reino Unido.
La base de datos, abierta a todos los usuarios, cuenta con 400 industrias de tinte, 200 de hilado y tejido y cerca de 140 de impresión y manufactura. Existen, además, 700 organizaciones dedicadas a la exportación de estos textiles y 50 a la importación.
Según el “Organic Cotton Market Report 2007-2008”, un informe de Organic Exchange, la venta mundial del algodón orgánico en prendas de ropa y hogar alcanzó los $3.2 mil millones en 2008. Todo apunta a que la certificación de este material tenderá a crecer de forma progresiva en los próximos años.
